Planning a winter getaway? A cruise along the South Australian Murray River might be just the reset you need.

The cooler months in South Australia are so fresh, crisp and also vibrant all at the same time. I’m sure you know those cosy nights and slower mornings, but, they also offer the perfect time to explore the natural beauty right on your doorstep. We’ve been doing this for 10 years and although both James and I love the summer on the water, and think, what are we going to do come winter…there is a true magic in the cooler months that is honestly hard to describe. There’s no better way to go slow, lap it all up than cruising along the peaceful waters of the Murray with Rivergum Cruises.

Winter just brings a special kind of magic to the river. The mist rising, the difference in colours on the cliffs and the wildlife that comes to life in the cooler months, what we don’t really see in the summertime. It’s honestly bliss.

If you love animals and natural wildlife, then you’ll love a few of these creatures you might spot on your winter river escape:

1. Birdlife Galore

The Murray is a birdwatcher’s dream. Pelican’s glide across the water, cormorants perch on the banks, and parrots add gorgeous colour. We also often see whistling kites, peregrine falcons, and spoonbills all of which are active year-round, but love the cooler months.

2. Kangaroos on the Banks

Cooler days make wildlife more active. Kangaroos often appear along the water’s edge in the early morning and late afternoon, grazing peacefully and offering the perfect Aussie photo moment.

3. Koalas in the Trees

Have you ever seen one in a tree? Koalas are well-camouflaged, hard to see, but the bare branches of winter make spotting them a little easier. James and I are always on the lookout for them as we cruise along.

4. Fish and Aquatic Life

Though the water may be cooler, fish and other river life are still busy beneath the surface. It’s not uncommon to see fish splash and it’s such a beautiful sight.

5. Turtles and River Critters

You might even catch turtles sunning themselves on a log on a crisp winter’s day, something you don’t see in summer.

A Beautiful Winter Escape in South Australia

There’s a calm stillness to the river in winter that you simply don’t get at other times of the year. Fewer boats, quieter banks, and a sense of space that allows you to slow down and really connect with nature. Pack a warm jacket, a beanie, and enjoy the peaceful serenity of a Rivergum Cruise. We have the hot chocolates, tea and all things nice waiting for you on board.
